Renting a property
In Denmark, there are two types of rental properties:
- Private rental properties
- Public rental properties
Expatriates usually choose private rental property because a quick taking over is normally possible. Properties for rent are usually advertised in newspapers, the internet or administered by rental agencies.
The Majority of public rental properties are built by building societies and subsidised by the state. There are often long waiting lists which make this kind of public housing less of an option for expatriates.
The facilities of rental properties vary considerably, and you should check whether the property meets your requirements regarding, for instance, parking and washing facilities, outdoor surroundings and rules about pets.
Rental properties are regulated primarily by two acts - the Rent Act and the Rent Control Act. The Rent Act applies to all properties in all of Denmark. The Rent Control Act applies to rental properties in municipalities that have chosen to control the level of rent to be paid for rented property.
